The Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD), was accredited in 1992 by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and in a very short time has become one of the top rated children’s hospitals in the country. As the only children’s hospital in New Hampshire, patients are referred to CHaD’s 26-bed inpatient unit from all the regional and community hospitals in New Hampshire and Vermont.
Annually over 400 newborns are cared for in CHaD’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Over the past 2 decades, the survival rate of low-birth-weight babies with underdeveloped lungs has increase from 15% to 85% because of CHaD’s highly specialized care and ground-breaking research. CHaD has the only free-standing Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in New Hampshire and Vermont. Children suffering from traumatic injuries or life threatening chronic illnesses are often flown to CHaD by the DHART helicopters. CHaD has 3 pediatric operating rooms with specially sized equipment and specially trained doctors, nurses and O.R. staff. Each year, CHaD treats over 150 children with childhood cancers. Today, their survival rate is 80%; up from 50% in 1974. CHaD’s Child Life Specialists work with children and families while they are in the hospital to acquaint them with the procedures, ease their concerns, and help kids continue to be kids throughout their hospital stay. CHaD’s unique PainFree Unit assist in finding ways for a child to overcome anxieties and pain associated with a medical procedure, whether it is through the use of anesthesia
or simple distraction with a portable DVD player. CHaD’s New Outpatient Center brings together all 30 pediatric specialities in one child-friendly space. CHaD also brings their specialists to the community through a major CHaD medical center in Manchester and many other sites throughout New Hampshire and Vermont.
CHaD has a policy of never turning away a patient, regardless of their family’s financial situation. Because of recent Medicaid cuts and changes in health care funding, CHaD no longer can raise funds only for the supplemental, compassionate services that we have come to expect from a children’s hospital, ie.: the Child Life and PainFree Programs, Injury Prevention Center, or the Child Advocacy and Protection Program. CHaD needs support to cover medically necessary procedures, procedures needed to save the lives of children throughout the twin sate region regardless of their family’s insurance or ability to pay.
